The Ultimate Courtship Ritual

Have you seen those nature documentaries that show how a bird fluffs up its coat of many feathers and does some backwards crazy dance on a tree branch to attract a mate? Or the fish that creates beautiful artistic display on the ocean floor, timed perfectly between the tides, also to attract a mate?

I’m betting that if you’re reading this blog, you’ve already attracted a mate and likely have produced offspring, which is why you may need this guide to teach you one of the most fundamental of all courtship rituals: finding a new babysitter. That’s right, our Hannah is off to college and although we have tried many many times to bribe her to stay local or take a few gap years and stay on with us, she is moving on. While we are all hoping she will make special guest appearances during holidays and we may even get her back next summer (just say no to internships, babysitters!), it’s time for us to make eyes at the teenage girls at the pool and hope they will find us as appealing as we find them.

Top criteria: gotta have access to a car. And a

Family.

Families come in all shapes and sizes. This week my husband’s family said goodbye to their matriarch, my husband’s mother, the kids’ grandmother, the Aunt Joan to cousins and their children. As our family gathered in a private interment ceremony, I looked around at our bunch: our sweet cousin, adopted from Korea as an infant and now thriving in a Masters Program at Virginia Tech. My niece’s long term boyfriend, an immigrant from Mexico who left his family of origin behind as a child to come to America years ago. My nephew, with his man-bun and scraggly beard, taller than his father and uncles.

Together with their younger cousins (my kids), they are the future of our family. While we look at photo albums and sort through china cabinets and linen closets, they head back to their worlds in Washington DC and Portland Oregon. They will continue the ongoing conquering of their worlds, one armed with his grandmother’s engagement ring “just in case” and all reinforced by the love and resiliency that comes with being raised in a faithful and loving family environment that sacrificed to educate their children.

Not all kids get that chance. This week…

Parents Just Don’t Understand

DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince knew it for sure: parents just don’t understand. For example, can anyone explain to me why my 9 y.o. twins want to spend so much time watching YouTubers play Minecraft? Or why this slime fad? I guess it’s our job as parents to question and wonder and it’s their job as kids to explore and push boundaries and we aren’t really supposed to understand each other. But here’s the thing … kids just don’t understand either. They wonder, among other things: why do we have to put away our laundry if we’re just going to wear it again and it’s going to end up in the hamper again?

It’s true. Parents and kids just …

One Day At A Time

Note to fall sports deadlines and early bird registrations: Calm The F— Down. SERIOUSLY. Some of us haven’t even purchased the end of year teacher gifts yet and you’re all “hurry up and sign up for fall soccer you so don’t miss the early bird price” and I’m all “fall? NOOOOOOO.”

Can we just enjoy a teeny bit of summer first before we have to start planning for fall? Why in the world does rec soccer need my registration this week when soccer rosters won’t come out until the week before practices start?

Before my oldest even finishes 5th grade…

This Week’s Buzz: May 15th – May 21

The Finish Line

Twin third graders’ field trip to the Philadelphia Zoo this week – the goal, on paper, was to choose an animal on which to do the end of year research project. The goal for chaperones was to tire out these excited monkeys and get them back on the bus safely and at the appointed time. In order to manage both goals, my co-chaperone WingMom and I raced our six boys all the way to the back, figuring it would be easier to get to the bus on time if we ended up close to the exit.

We managed to navigate six very busy boys to the back of the zoo without too many stops and we were rewarded amply – it was empty and we could easily get up close and personal with all of the exhibits, and (pro tip) it was easy to keep track of our charges because there were very few other people around. Moments later, we were in the otter/red panda area when a zoo official asked us to leave the area because THE RED PANDA HAD ESCAPED ITS ENCLOSURE. Zoo personnel were rapidly arriving on the scene – yellow jackets on bicycles, in golf carts, and on foot, with walkie-talkies and badges.

It was literally the

The Top of the Coaster

We’re almost there, to the top of the coaster where you sit back in the seat and it click-click-click-clicks up and up and if you didn’t know what was coming it would be a slow, enjoyable ride and you could look around and see the the sky and the tops of the trees and for miles in every direction but instead because you do know what’s coming all you can do is look ahead and think when? When? Now? When?

THAT’S what the end of the school year is like. Right now, we are clicking up to the apex. We know what’s coming and we are about to take that deep breath that will help us remain calm and somewhat in control during the series of plummets and twists and turns and rocket starts that are about to happen.

Projects hinted about in March and outlined in April are now almost due. Field trips and brown bag lunches and field day celebrations are all on the calendar THIS MONTH. In the immediate future,

The Way We Were

Those damn Facebook memories. That damn TimeHop app. All it does is give me a daily reminder, complete with notification on my phone screen, of how fast it all goes. This week, it was a glimpse back to the Easters of yesteryear, complete with My Little Pony toys and footie pajamas and twins with binkies and blankies. Now, there’s deodorant and iTunes gift cards in the Easter baskets. I can’t even remember the last time we had a binky in this house (we do still have the blankies).

It.just.goes.so.fast.

I spent Friday morning at…

This Week’s Buzz: March 27th – April 2nd

Hippity Hoppity

They say Easter’s on its way. Yes, kids, a large bunny in a bow tie skips through the house hiding eggs and wearing pants and leaves you Mommy’s favorite kinds of candy in a basket – along with sunscreen, goggles, and all the other stuff you’ll need for a quick trip to Florida over spring break. Sounds legit, right?

About as legit as calling a week off from school in the late winter “spring break.” Without being too much of a Debbie Downer, please manage your own expectations. It is likely that there will be very little break in your break, unless your children are spending their break in a different location than you are.

Break will either entail all of you together, possibly…

This Week’s Buzz: March 6th – March 12th

And the Award Goes To,

The votes are in. And for work in a ongoing performance piece called “no, you may not have a sleepover” and a recurring role in “42 additional reasons we don’t have an Xbox” the award for the most terrible mother goes to – once again – me.

[Applause]

I’d like to thank the Academy for this honor. It’s especially meaningful to accept this award after having been awarded it so many times before – it shows a level of commitment and persistence that I did not think possible during that one 10K I did where I had to stop and walk several times and during many trial-and-error episodes with various and sundry stylists in the greater 19707.

But my commitment to…

This Week’s Buzz: February 27th – March 4th

Dear Mother Nature,

Hey girl. On behalf of the moms, I just want to say thanks. I see that we are back to our regularly scheduled programming – but the interruption for a few days of spring temps and bright sunshine this week made a big difference.
