This Week’s Buzz: October 16th – October 22nd

To Do

Somewhere on the to-do list, between “feed family daily” and “make photo books from 2009” is allllll the other stuff – the daily things that never really make it on to the list because they just have to happen day in, day out and then the major long term projects that you will likely never get to. College friends were over the other night and we were as casual as you can only be with the friends you’ve had for decades – sweatpants, unwashed hair in ponytails, pile of unfolded laundry, plenty of vino. As the night was wrapping up and the husbands were collected kids and shoes, I scribbled out a quick to do list for myself for the morning. One friend commented that she never makes a to do list – she figures if it’s important, she’ll remember and if not, oh well. She said if she writes it all down, she feels like she’ll just implode from the pressure of knowing how little of it will really happen.

I get it. You just can’t do...

Fun for the Whole Family

Bonfires, hayrides, apple picking, tailgates. We are fall ready with our new fall sweaters, cute fall boots, and abundant ideas for family fun for the whole family. Except the tween wants to bring a friend, the soccer schedule means we can’t leave until around 3, and it’s so freaking HOT that none of this fall fun actually sounds like fun and we’d all rather be watching football in the air conditioning or reading our book club books on the screened porch.

Sometimes the thing that’s the most fun…

Under Pressure

Dashed away from our desks for a quick lunch and, because we are moms with kids and it is September, talk turned to the pressure cooker – both literal and metaphorical.

LITERALLY: A pressure cooker works by cooking food using water or other cooking liquid in a sealed vessel (aka pressure cooker). As pressure cooking cooks food faster than conventional cooking methods, it saves energy. The trapped steam increases the internal pressure and allows the temperature to rise.

There are Facebook groups with tens of thousands of members dedicated to pressure cooker discussions (true confession: a quick perusal of one of these groups was mostly people named Joan, Marsha, or Carol thanking people for letting them join the group.) You can buy a pressure cooker from amazon for like $90. A google search for pressure cooker recipes yielded 3.5million results in .64 seconds.

The recipes mostly call for regular ingredients and then weird instructions like “let the pressure come down” and then add wine, which is funny because I add wine to myself to bring the pressure down. Who knew I was pretty much Julia Child.

So yes, the…

Five Ways You Can Tell It’s Back To School Season

1. Hand cramps. No matter how digital your school claims it is, no matter how high tech with the remind app and the email blasts, you will fill out 4200 forms for each kid during the first weeks of school. The forms will have been emailed to you and you will have printed them out, and then you will send them in and the teachers will have already distributed blank ones. Why email it at all? Because the school is so high tech.

2. Tissues. It’s allergy season, plus all the crying. Them crying because they are just.so.tired after a whole week of school. You crying for the first day because your tiny infant just went off to middle school, and then crying the rest of the time because you realize their homework is beyond your general recollection and you can’t actually help any longer.

3. Ankles. All the…

The Ultimate Courtship Ritual

Have you seen those nature documentaries that show how a bird fluffs up its coat of many feathers and does some backwards crazy dance on a tree branch to attract a mate? Or the fish that creates beautiful artistic display on the ocean floor, timed perfectly between the tides, also to attract a mate?

I’m betting that if you’re reading this blog, you’ve already attracted a mate and likely have produced offspring, which is why you may need this guide to teach you one of the most fundamental of all courtship rituals: finding a new babysitter. That’s right, our Hannah is off to college and although we have tried many many times to bribe her to stay local or take a few gap years and stay on with us, she is moving on. While we are all hoping she will make special guest appearances during holidays and we may even get her back next summer (just say no to internships, babysitters!), it’s time for us to make eyes at the teenage girls at the pool and hope they will find us as appealing as we find them.

Top criteria: gotta have access to a car. And a

Family.

Families come in all shapes and sizes. This week my husband’s family said goodbye to their matriarch, my husband’s mother, the kids’ grandmother, the Aunt Joan to cousins and their children. As our family gathered in a private interment ceremony, I looked around at our bunch: our sweet cousin, adopted from Korea as an infant and now thriving in a Masters Program at Virginia Tech. My niece’s long term boyfriend, an immigrant from Mexico who left his family of origin behind as a child to come to America years ago. My nephew, with his man-bun and scraggly beard, taller than his father and uncles.

Together with their younger cousins (my kids), they are the future of our family. While we look at photo albums and sort through china cabinets and linen closets, they head back to their worlds in Washington DC and Portland Oregon. They will continue the ongoing conquering of their worlds, one armed with his grandmother’s engagement ring “just in case” and all reinforced by the love and resiliency that comes with being raised in a faithful and loving family environment that sacrificed to educate their children.

Not all kids get that chance. This week…

Parents Just Don’t Understand

DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince knew it for sure: parents just don’t understand. For example, can anyone explain to me why my 9 y.o. twins want to spend so much time watching YouTubers play Minecraft? Or why this slime fad? I guess it’s our job as parents to question and wonder and it’s their job as kids to explore and push boundaries and we aren’t really supposed to understand each other. But here’s the thing … kids just don’t understand either. They wonder, among other things: why do we have to put away our laundry if we’re just going to wear it again and it’s going to end up in the hamper again?

It’s true. Parents and kids just …

One Day At A Time

Note to fall sports deadlines and early bird registrations: Calm The F— Down. SERIOUSLY. Some of us haven’t even purchased the end of year teacher gifts yet and you’re all “hurry up and sign up for fall soccer you so don’t miss the early bird price” and I’m all “fall? NOOOOOOO.”

Before my oldest even finishes 5th grade…

This Week’s Buzz: May 15th – May 21

The Finish Line

Twin third graders’ field trip to the Philadelphia Zoo this week – the goal, on paper, was to choose an animal on which to do the end of year research project. The goal for chaperones was to tire out these excited monkeys and get them back on the bus safely and at the appointed time. In order to manage both goals, my co-chaperone WingMom and I raced our six boys all the way to the back, figuring it would be easier to get to the bus on time if we ended up close to the exit.
