This is great advice: just put out the fire in front of you. After all, if something is literally in flames, nothing else matters - not the dinner menu, whether there is clean laundry, whether they studied for the test next week. So, if the metaphorical fire is “mom, my homecoming dress needs to be hemmed” then deal with that, put out THAT fire, and then move on to the next fire. Yes, the lack of clean laundry can rapidly become the fire you need to put out next, but for now - back burner that shit and live to fight another fire.
Rinse and repeat, forever.
